Serendipity!!!
By sheer luck, I stumbled across the very first issue of Volksworld in late 1987!!
I was drawn to the strange looking ‘baby blue’ 1963(I now know!) Beetle on the cover!
That was it… I pulled that magazine apart to decorate my walls, within two months (two Volksworld issues later!!)… I’d bought a (far too rusty!!) 1972 VW Beetle and by Christmas, rubbed it down, hired a paint gun and compressor and painted it: ‘Porsche Pink!’ in my Mum and Dad’s garage!
(I know, I know!!! but… it was the Cal-Look ‘pastel colour’ 19Eighties… so forgive me!)
My parents thought I was nuts but who cares, who listens to their parents? right!? I was now officially ‘air-cooled addicted’ and of course… ‘very cool’ driving a ‘Cal-Looker!!’
Driving an early VW or Porsche is a Wonderful thing!
My ‘daily driver’ has been an air-cooled vehicle for 39 years! (where did the time go!!), Beetles, Ghias, Campers, T3’s, 911’s 912’s and 356’s, even the odd T25!
A questioned I’m asked all the time: “can it be by daily driver?’
As long as your air-cooled car is well looked after and maintained… they’re an absolute pleasure to drive and, so… yes!!!
The 1973 VW 1303 (to the left), I bought to teach my four sons to drive (hence the L-Plate!)! The visibility’s fantastic for an inexperienced driver, they found the gears a bit ‘cranky!’ but a lot of fun was had and the odd minor scrape of course!!
I’ve now fitted a 1641cc engine with a single ‘performance’ carburettor and vacuum advance distributor… my drive to work is a joy! Wave if you see me!!
Nearly 40 years!!!!! gulp!
I assure you, no one will love and care for your VW or Porsche like I will! (After you of course!)
With nearly 40 years of owning, driving, working on, restoring and enjoying everything from the humble Beetle and Type 2’s to the more ‘prestigious’ Karmann Ghias, Porsche 356, 912 and 911’s… air-cooled is in my blood!

I’ve always believed that these cars are meant to be driven. The old adage: “it’s the journey, not the destination,” is so true!
Driving at a comfortable speed, the car tells you when its comfortable, I know I’ll get there when I get there, I stop for petrol and a Greggs sausage roll: “nice car mate!!” “what year is it” “my uncle had one of these!” Always smiles and waves!
